A wash removes loose dirt. A detail removes what is bonded to the paint, meaning iron particles from brake dust, salt worked into the finish, and road film, then puts protection back on. You can feel the difference with your hand: clean paint is glass-smooth, washed paint is gritty. There is also the damage side of it. Tunnel wash brushes carry grit from every car that went through ahead of yours and drag it across your clear coat, so each pass lays down fine scratches. Those stack up into the haze you see in direct sunlight, and swirled paint reads as a neglected car to anyone valuing it. Finish is one of the first things that moves a resale or trade-in number, which makes a few years of tunnel washes an expensive way to save ten dollars.
Twice a year covers most drivers: once in spring after salt season, once in fall before it starts. If you park outside, or your commute is Hall Road twice a day, quarterly is better. Traffic film builds faster on the four lane roads than it does on the subdivision streets.
An exterior detail cleans and protects; it does not level the clear coat. If you see swirls in direct sun, that is correction work. We will point it out and quote it separately rather than pretending wax fixed it.
