What A Coating Actually Does

Wax sits on the paint and washes off. A coating chemically bonds to it and stays. That changes three things you notice every week.

  • Salt and road film release with a rinse instead of scrubbing
  • Water beads and sheets off, so you get fewer spots and faster drying
  • UV and chemical resistance, which slows oxidation and fading

What it does not do is make paint bulletproof. A coating will not stop a rock chip and it will not hide swirls. It locks in whatever finish is underneath it. That is why the correction has to happen first. Coating over swirled paint just seals the swirls in for a few years.

Why Coating Makes Sense In Michigan

Between November and March, everything you drive on is coated in rock salt and magnesium chloride brine. Salt is corrosive and it goes after the clear coat before it ever reaches metal. Every day it sits on the paint is a day it is working.

A coating does not make salt harmless, but it gives it a much harder surface to grip and makes it far easier to get off. A rinse that used to leave a hazy film now actually removes it. Over a five-month winter, that difference compounds.

The best time to book is spring, right after salt season and after correction. You start the coating clock on clean, levelled paint and carry it through the summer UV that comes next.

How We Apply A Coating

01

Inspect & Measure

Paint depth read on every panel so we know how much clear coat there is to work with.

02

Decontaminate

Chemical decon and clay strip bonded salt, iron and film so nothing gets sealed under the coating.

03

Correct

Machine polishing levels swirls and etching. A coating locks in whatever is beneath it, so this comes first.

04

Coat & Cure

Panel-by-panel application, levelled by hand, then cured indoors before the car goes back out.

Living With A Coated Car

Maintenance is simpler, not zero. Wash with clean tools and a pH-neutral soap, skip the automatic brushes entirely, and dry with a clean towel or a blower.

Automatic brushes are the fastest way to undo the work. They carry grit from every vehicle before yours and will scour a coating just like they scour paint.

We top the coating on maintenance visits to keep the hydrophobic behaviour sharp. Members get that built into the schedule, which is the easiest way to get the full life out of it.

What Other Macomb Drivers Say

★★★★★

Had my car done by DetailGuyz and got the ceramic coating done too. Honestly, it looks amazing - way shinier than I expected and feels protected. The guys were chill, on time, and didn’t make it complicated. Definitely the best mobile detailing I’ve had in Macomb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Years rather than months, with the exact life depending on the product, how the car is stored, and how it is washed. Wash technique is the biggest variable by far. A coated car run through automatic brushes will not last.
If the paint has swirls or haze, yes. A coating is clear and it bonds to whatever is under it, so any defect you leave gets locked in for the life of the coating. On a brand new car with clean paint, a light polish and decon may be all that is needed.
Usually overnight. Correction and application take the working day, and the coating needs controlled cure time before the car goes back out into weather.
You do not need to, and most waxes just sit on top and dull the hydrophobic effect. If you want to top it, use a coating-specific spray sealant, or let us top it on a maintenance visit.
No. Coatings are measured in microns and are about chemical and UV resistance, not impact. Paint protection film is the answer for chips.
Yes. Wheels are one of the highest-value places to coat because brake dust stops baking on, and coated glass sheds water noticeably better in the rain.
